The Border Security Force (BSF) and the Odisha police have set up a Company Operating Base (COB) at Gurasethu in Swabhiman Anchal along the Odisha-Andhra Pradesh border. It has been termed as a milestone in the fight against the left-wing extremists.
- Gurasethu was dubbed as the “ideological headquarters” of the outlawed CPI(Maoist).
- The BSF and the Odisha police personnel unfurled the tricolour in front of the CPI(Maoist)’s ‘Martyr Pillar’ at Gurasethu in Malkangiri district, Odisha.
- The CPI (Maoist) used to conduct training and other activities without fear, Gurasethu as the it was not easily accessible.
What is Swabhiman Anchal?
- The Swabhiman Anchal was formerly known as the cut-off area. It was covered by water from three sides and another side by inhospitable terrain.
- The region had long been a stronghold of left-wing extremists.
- Situated along Odisha-Andhra Pradesh border, Swabhiman Anchal comprising 151 villages was considered as a liberated zone by the Left ultras.
- Maoists from Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh used to slip into Swabhiman Anchal to take refuge.
