The Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla inaugured the ninth Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) India region conference at Udaipur, Rajasthan.

  • During his inaugural address, Mr. Birla made a strong pitch for using digital technology so that citizens get access to the functioning of the legislative bodies and could see the participation of their elected representatives.
  • He said information provided in various legislatures should be exhaustive and comprehensive and informed that work on a common platform — One Nation One Legislative platform — was under way to put every issue raised in an Assembly or Parliament, every debate, every question was posted online.
  • The theme of the two-day regional conference of the CPA was “Strengthening Democracy and good governance in digital age”.
  • The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) is one of the oldest established organisations in the Commonwealth.
  • Founded in 1911, it is a membership association which brings together Members, irrespective of gender, race, religion or culture, who are united by community of interest, respect for the rule of law and individual rights and freedoms, and by the pursuit of the positive ideals of parliamentary democracy.
  • The Association is made up of over 180 Legislatures (or Branches) divided up between nine geographic regions of the Commonwealth.
  • It offers a vast opportunity for Parliamentarians and parliamentary staff to collaborate on issues of mutual interest and to share good practice.
