Coal supply under bridge linkage

The Union Ministry of Power has recommended to the Union Ministry of Coal to supply coal to thermal power stations in Rajasthan under bridge linkage scheme.

  • The recommendation will pave the way for supply of 24.4 million tonnes of coal annually to Rajasthan.

About the bridge linkage

  • As per the norms of the Coal Ministry, the bridge linkage acts like a short-term arrangement to bridge the gap between the requirement of coal of a specified end use plant of the Central and State public sector undertakings and the start of production from the linked allotted coal mine or block.
  • The bridge linkage may be granted for a fixed period of three years from the date of allotment of coal mines.
  • The shorter duration of bridge linkage acts as an incentive for the allottees to expedite production from coal mines and blocks.
  • The Ministry of Coal grants a short-term coal linkage to central and state public sector units which have been allotted Schedule III coal mines.
  • Under the Coal Mines (Special Provisions) Act, Schedule III coal mines are those which require some work or clearances before they start to produce.
