Climate Resilient Coastal Fishermen Villages (CRCFV) & BOBLME Project

The Union Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying has emphasized the threat posed by climate change to the Blue Economy, which could severely impact fishermen and coastal communities. To address these challenges, the government has launched key initiatives to enhance resilience and sustainability in the fisheries sector.

Key Initiatives:

  • Climate Resilient Coastal Fishermen Villages (CRCFV) Initiative:
    • 100 coastal villages identified for development under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY).
    • Implemented in consultation with coastal state governments to ensure long-term sustainability of fishing communities.
    • Infrastructure development includes:
      • Fish drying yards, processing centers, and markets.
      • Fishing jetties, ice plants, and cold storage.
      • Emergency rescue operations for coastal safety.
  • Bay of Bengal Large Marine Ecosystem (BOBLME) Project:
    • Funded by: Global Environment Facility (GEF) and Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD).
    • Implemented by: FAO, in partnership with the Bay of Bengal Programme Inter-Governmental Organization (BOBP-IGO).
    • Objective:
      • Promote an Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management (EAFM).
      • Strengthen sustainable fisheries practices in the Bay of Bengal region.
