India rose two spots to rank 8th out of 63 countries in the Climate Change Performance Index 2023 (CCPI) released by by Germanwatch, NewClimate Institute and the Climate Action Network.

- In the Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Energy Use categories, the country was rated “high”.
- In the Climate Policy and Renewable Energy categories, it earned a “medium” rating. In 2022 and 2021, India stood in the tenth spot, while in 2020 it ranked ninth on the list.
- In the overall standings, the first three places were left blank on the grounds that no country is on track to halve its emissions by 2025, compared to the 1990 levels.
- Denmark, with a score of 79.61, ranked fourth, followed by Sweden with 73.28 points. India scored 67.35 points.
- The CCPI evaluates 59 countries and the European Union, which together generate over 90 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions.
- Using standardised criteria, it looks at 4 categories, with 14 indicators: Greenhouse gas emissions, renewable energy, energy use, and climate policy.
- The CCPI tracks the implementation of the Paris Agreement by various countries.
- As per the index, India is on track to meet its 2030 emissions targets.
- The report added that India must adopt a carbon pricing mechanism and develop more capacities at the sub-national level to improve its performance.
