The Indian Railways on 17 June completed a successful trial of an electric engine from Sangaldan to Reasi, crossing the world’s highest steel arch rail bridge, the Chenab Bridge.
Key points
- The Chenab Bridge in Jammu and Kashmir stands taller than the Eiffel Tower in Paris, marking a significant engineering feat under the 46-km long Udhampur Srinagar Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) Project.
- Constructed over the Chenab River gorge in Reasi district, Jammu and Kashmir, the Chenab Bridge reaches a height of 359 meters (approximately 1,178 feet), surpassing the Eiffel Tower by 35 meters.
- The construction of the highest railway bridge was the biggest civil-engineering challenge faced by any railway project in India in recent history.
- Once completed, the bridge will be able to withstand winds with speeds up to 260 kmph and will have a lifespan of 120 years.
