The Union government has declared the Wayanad landslide a disaster of ‘severe nature’ for all practical purposes.
- The classification would help the state to source funds, including the local area development funds of MPs, for the rehabilitation efforts.
- The letter issued by the Union Home Ministry pointed out that in the event of disaster of a ‘severe nature’, financial assistance towards the notified natural disasters including landslide can be met from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) already placed at the state’s disposal. MP funds can also be used for the same.
- However, based on assessments carried out by the Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT), the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) may provide additional financial support.
- On July 30, 2024, Chooralmala and Mundakkai villages in the district of Wayanad in Kerala were hit by devastating landslides triggered by torrential downpour. The massive landslides so far has claimed over 230 lives.
