Carrhotus tholpettyensis-A new species of jumping spider

A team of researchers has discovered a new species of spider from the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary in kerala.

  • The new species of spider, Carrhotus tholpettyensis, was found from the moist deciduous forest of Tholpetty range of the Wayanad sanctuary in Western Ghats.
  • Carrhotus tholpettyensis is a nocturnal jumping spider which retreats to hide under leaves during day time and comes out only in the night for feeding.
  • So far 287 species of jumping spiders are reported from India.
  • Its discovery was reported in the scientific journal Arthropoda Selecta published from Russia.

About Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary

  • The Wayanad Wildlife sanctuary was set up in 1973.
  • It covers the Wayanad Plateau (about 3000 km2) situated at the confluence of three biologically distinct and diverse regions- the main Western Ghat Mountains, the Nilgiri Hills and the Deccan Plateau.
  • The Wayanad sanctuary is a component of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve (5,520 km2) and of the Elephant Reserve No. 7 of South India.
  • The protected areas of Wayanad share their boundaries with the protected area network of Nagarhole and Bandipur Tiger Reserves of Karnataka in the northeast and Mudumalai Tiger Reserve of Tamil Nadu in the southeast.
  • Kuruma, Paniya, Kattunaicka, Urali, Kurichiar and Adiyar are some of the tribal communities that inhabit this area.
