Captain Abhilasha Barak becomes first woman combat aviator in army

Captain Abhilasha Barak has become the first woman to join the Army Aviation Corps as combat aviator after completion of a six-month combat Army aviation course.

  • Captain Abhilasha Barak has been awarded the coveted wings along with 36 Army pilots on May 25 by Lieutenant General A. K. Suri, Director-General and Colonel Commandant, Army Aviation, during a valedictory ceremony at the Combat Army Aviation Training School, Nashik.
  • Capt. Barak hails from Haryana and was commissioned into the Army Air Defence Corps in September 2018.
  • She is the daughter of Colonel S. Om Singh (retd).
  • Capt. Barak has done a number of professional military courses before joining the Army Aviation Corps.
  • The Army Aviation Corps is the youngest Corps of the Army.
  • It was formed on November 1, 1986.
  • Over the years, it has expanded with addition of new units and equipment such as Cheetah and the advanced light helicopter Dhruv, weaponised Rudra and the light combat helicopter.
