Cabinet approves major Reforms in Telecom Sector

The Union Cabinet on September 15, 2021 approved several measures to extend a lifeline to the telecom sector. These measures includes following:

  • Moratorium/Deferment of upto four years in annual payments of dues arising out of the AGR judgement, however they have to pay interest compounded annually,
  • A fixed calendar for spectrum auctions with an extended tenure of 30 years for future spectrum allocations,
  • Foreign direct investment (FDI) in the sector has also been allowed up to 100% under the automatic route, from the existing limit of 49%.
  • Surrender of spectrum will be permitted after 10 years for spectrum acquired in the future auctions.
  • No Spectrum Usage Charge (SUC) for spectrum acquired in future spectrum auctions.
