A group of “citizen scientists” on an expedition in the rainforests of Borneo have discovered a new species of land snail and named it after climate activist Greta Thunberg.
They decided to name the new snail species Craspedotropis gretathunbergae after the Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, because caenogastropod snails from tropical rainforests are very sensitive to the droughts and temperature extremes that are likely to be more frequent as climate change continues.
The snails were found during a field course conducted by Taxon Expeditions at Kuala Belalong Field Studies Centre in Brunei.
