The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has again named Byrnihat as the most polluted urban area in India for the second consecutive year in 2024.
- Located about 25 km from Guwahati on the highway to Shillong, this industrial town—home to numerous industrial units including coke plants along the Assam-Meghalaya border—registered an AQI of 302 in 2023, and the pollution levels have remained nearly unchanged in 2024.
- This persistent air quality issue highlights the urgent need for coordinated intervention and enhanced cooperation between the states of Assam and Meghalaya to tackle industrial emissions and improve environmental conditions.
