Natural gas has been continuously flowing out of Baghjan 5 gas well in Assam following a blowout since May 27, 2020.
Basic Prelims Facts About Assam Gas Leak
1. It is a purely gas-producing well in Tinsukia district of Assam.
2. Natural gas was drilled by Oil India Limited (OIL) in 2006.
3. The well produces around 80,000 standard cubic metres per day (SCMD) of gas from a depth of 3,870 metres.
4. Baghjan 5 is at an aerial distance of 900 metres from the Dibru-Saikhowa National Park. However, the well is outside the Eco Sensitive Zone of the park.
5. Due to gas leak, a variety of fish and an endangered Gangetic dolphin have died.
6. The Maguri-Motapung wetland, which is an Important Bird Area notified by the Bombay Natural History Society, is also not far from the well.
