Assam Keelback re-discovered after 129 years

A team of researchers have re-discovered Assam Keelback-a rare species of snake in Arunachal Pradesh that was last seen 129 years ago.

The snake Assam Keelback was last seen in 1891 when the British started expanding tea plantation in Sivasagar, the capital of the erstwhile Ahom Kingdom in upper Assam.

It was re-discovered by Abhijit Das, David J Gower and V Deepak in September 2018, but the discovery was confirmed only recently to be the Assam Keelback or Herpetoreas pealii.

 They found the snake inside the Poba Reserve Forest. 

The Assam Keelback is endemic to the Northeast India.
