Argentina’s Congress legalised abortions up to the 14th week of pregnancy on December 30, 2020.
- The law is being held as the ground-breaking decision in a country that has some of the world’s most restrictive abortion laws.
- Now Argentina has become the first major country in Latin America to legalize abortion.
- Prior to the passing of this abortion bill, abortions were only permitted in cases of rape or when the woman’s health was at serious risk.
- The Catholic Church had opposed the move, calling on senators to reject the bill supported by centre-left President Alberto Fernández.
- Abortions are completely banned in some Latin American countries like El Salvador, Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic and only allowed in certain restricted circumstances in most other Latin American nations.
