The Pilot Project on skilling of Design/ Commissioning technical personnel associated with application of geo-textiles in infrastructure projects (roads. highways, railways, water resources) has been approved by the Ministry of Textiles.
- It will be conducted concurrently by (i) Indian Institute of Sciences, Bangalore, (ii) Indian Institute of Technology, Madras; and (iii) Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee.
What are Geotextiles?
- Geotextiles are polymer fabrics used in the construction of roads, drains, harbour works, and breakwaters, and for land reclamation and many other civil engineering purposes.
- To perform the above functions, geotextiles are generically made from plastic materials, mostly polypropylene and polyester, but also polyethylene, polyamide (nylon), polyvinylidene chloride, and fibreglass are used.
- Sewing thread for geotextiles is generally made from any of the above polymers.
