India’s first national trade union, All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), turns 100 on October 31, 2020.
- Freedom fighters Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Lala Lajpat Rai were instrumental in forming the union.
- The first Congress of AITUC was held on October 31, 1920 in Mumbai, by which time Tilak had died.
- Lala Lajpat presided over the congress of AITUC at Empire Theatre in Bombay.
- Currently it is facing the worst challenges since 1920. The changing employment scenario, growth of the services sector where unionism is almost nil, lack of permanent jobs, and the industry’s desire to outsource hiring pose fresh threats.
