The African Union (AU) on January 31, 2022 suspended Burkina Faso a week after the country suffered its latest coup, as envoys from West Africa and the UN headed for talks with the new junta.
- The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) also suspended Burkina Faso from its ranks and warned of possible sanctions pending the outcome of meetings with the military government.
- On January 24, mutineering soldiers had detained President Roch Marc Christian Kabore amid rising public anger at his failure to stem violence by armed groups ravaging the impoverished nation.
