African catfish farming ban

The district administration committee identified 259 prohibited African catfish farms in the district of Krishnagiri, Tamil Nadu. These farms were destroyed. The committee was formed in pursuance to the order of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) .

Basic Facts

-African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) is also known as ‘African magur’ or African keluthi.

-This African catfish farming activity was banned under the Biological Diversity Act, 2002.

-Farming involved feeding of chicken and egg wastes to African catfish, causing foul smell and water pollution.

-Since it is an exotic species and it can compromise our genetic pool.
