Adi Sankaracharya’s birthplace likely to be declared as a monument of national importance

  • The National Monuments Authority (NMA) chairman Tarun Vijay recently met the governor of Kerala Arif Mohammad Khan regarding the declaration of the birthplace of Adi Sankaracharya in the state as a monument of national importance.
  • Mr. Vijay said that the entire birthplace in Kerala’s Kalady includes Poorna (Periyar) river, Muthalakavadu (crocodile ghat), and the last rite memorial pillar of Adi Sankara’s mother Aryamba-( 8th CE) may form a sacred space national monument dedicated to the great seer.

What is a monument of national importance?

  • A monument of national importance, if designated by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), authorises the central government to “maintain, protect and promote the site”, which may be considered of significant historical importance, as mandated by the Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958.
  • Currently, there are around 3,600 monuments of national importance being protected by the ASI.
