The Rubber Research Institute of India (RRII) under the Rubber Board has developed a method to dry sheet rubber in 24 hours in place of the traditional method that takes four to five days.
- The success of a pilot study by researchers has prompted the institute to take up a larger-scale experiment to find out if the technique will work on a day-to-day basis for rubber farmers.
- Vinoth Thomas and Joy Joseph, scientists at the institute, say rubber plantations are mostly owned by small farmers. They prefer to sell their produce as quality sheet rubber (ribbed smoked sheets or RSS-4 grade) to earn better price in the market.
- There exist different grades of Ribbed Smoked Sheets rubber, namely RSS IX, RSS 1, RSS 2, RSS 3, RSS 4 and RSS 5.
