9th Amur Falcon Festival

The 9th Amur Falcon Festival was celebrated with great fervour at the Lower Ground of Tamenglong district in Manipur.

  • The event was organized by the District Administration of Tamenglong, the State Forest Department, and the Rainforest Club of Tamenglong.
  • The Amur Falcon Festival is celebrated annually in Tamenglong district of Manipur to raise awareness of the migratory bird Amur falcon, which roosts in Tamenglong district during October-November every year when it flies to the southern and eastern parts of Africa.
  • Two Amur falcons were satellite-tagged by the Wildlife Trust of India this year and released from Tamenglong district as part of ongoing efforts to study and protect these migratory birds.
  • The Amur Falcon is a migratory raptor. Every year, the small, resilient birds make the daring voyage from breeding grounds in Russia and China to winter in southern Africa.
  • It is supposed that the falcons cross the Arabian Sea during their migration, but much is still unknown about the patterns of their estimated 22,000 km migration.
