Indian Navy’s indigenously designed Nilgiri-class stealth guided missile frigate Taragiri was launched on September 11 in Mumbai.
Salient features
- The frigate Taragiri-a Project 17A Frigate, has been built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL) for the Indian Navy.
- ‘Taragiri’, named after a hill range in Himalayas located at Garhwal, is the fifth ship of Project 17A Frigates.
- These ships are advanced version of the P17 Frigates (Shivalik Class) with improved stealth features, state of the art weapons and sensors and platform management systems.
- ‘Taragiri’ is the reincarnation of erstwhile ‘Taragiri’, the Leander Class ASW Frigate, Taragiri, a 149-metre-long and 17.8-metre-wide ship is propelled by a combination of two gas turbines and two main diesel engines which are designed to achieve a speed of over 28 knots at a displacement of around 6670 tonnes.
- Taragiri has been built using integrated construction methodology, which involves hull blocks construction in different geographical locations and integration on the slipway at the MDL.
