Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Prakash Javadekar on November 12, 2020 said that Bihar has come on the map of Ramsar sites.
- In a tweet, he said, Bihar has got its first Ramsar site at Kabartal in Begusarai becoming a wetland of International importance.
- Kabartal Wetland, also known as Kanwar Jheel, covers 2,620 hectares of the Indo-Gangetic plains in the northern Bihar’ Begusarai district.
- The Site is one of 18 wetlands within an extensive floodplain complex; it floods during the monsoon season to a depth of 1.5 metres.
- It is also a valuable site for fish biodiversity with over 50 species documented.
- It is an important wetland of the Central Asian Flyway for the population of migratory birds and biodiversity. With this, now India has 39 Ramsar sites.
