24 coastal villages in Odisha were recognised by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC-UNESCO) as ‘Tsunami Ready’.

- These villages are located in Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Puri and Ganjam districts.
- The recognition was given during the 2nd Global Tsunami Symposium held in Indonesia on November 11.
- Besides, the Tsunami Ready Recognition Certificates were renewed for two villages in the state. These villages are Noliasahi in Jagatsinghpur district and Venkatraipur in Ganjam district. They were recognised as Tsunami Ready in 2020.
- The government has identified 381 villages in the state as tsunami-prone.
About Tsunami Ready Recognition Programme
- The UNESCO-IOC Tsunami Ready Recognition Programme (TRRP) is an international community-based effort to bolster risk prevention and mitigation across global coastal zones.
- This voluntary, performance-based community recognition programme is a collaborative effort to meet a standard level of tsunami preparedness.
- 12 indicators have been conceived to provide a consistent evaluation standard. All must be met to gain the recognition, which is renewable every four years.
