- Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the second edition ‘World Sustainable Development Summit-2018’ (WSDS) in Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi on February 16, 2018
- Host: The summit is the flagship forum of ‘The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI)’.
- Participants: Over two thousand delegates are expected to participate in the summit, including several Central Ministers, policymakers, researchers, diplomats and corporates from around the world.
- Theme: The theme of the three-day summit is ‘partnerships for a resilient planet’ which seeking to create action frameworks to resolve some of the most urgent challenges facing developing economies in the backdrop of climate change.
- Objectives: The sumitt seeks to bring together, global leaders and thinkers in the fields of sustainable development, energy and environment sectors, on a common platform.The sumitt will address a wide variety of issues, including combating land degradation, effective waste management mechanisms, combat air pollution effectively and create financial mechanisms to enable effective climate change mitigation.
Prime Minister outlined following points;
- As part of the Nationally Determined Contributions. India committed to reducing33 to 35 percentof emission intensityof its GDPduring 2005 to 2030.
- India is on track to meet its Copenhagen Pledge of reducing the emissions intensityof its GDPby 20 to 25 percent over 2005 levelsby 2020.
- The goal of creating a carbon sink of 2.5 to 3 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent by 2030 had once seemed difficult to many is in the right direction.
- India has gained international recognitionfor 10 out of its 18 Biosphere Reservesunder UNESCO’s Man and Biosphere programme.
- India has planned to draw One 175 Giga-Watts of energy from renewable sources by 2022.This includes 100 Giga-Watts from Solar Energyand another 75Giga-Watts from Wind and other sources.
- With only 2.4 percent of the world’s land area, India harbours 7-8 percent of the recorded species diversity,while supporting nearly 18 percent of human population.
- The Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana has been launched to ensurethat no farm goes without water.It’s motto is ‘More crop, per drop.’
- The Greenovation Exhibition: The Greenovation Exhibition will showcase the latest technological advancements to meet Sustainable Development Goals.

- The World Sustainable Development Summit (WSDS), TERI’s flagship event, has been conceptualized as a single platform to accelerate action towards sustainable development and especially climate change.
- It seeks to bring together the finest minds and leading thinkers of the world to focus attention on the challenge of sustainable development and has emerged as a landmark event addressing issues pertinent to the future of humanity.
- The second edition of the sumitt builds on the success and legacy of the ‘Delhi Sustainable Development Summit (DSDS)’ which was the leading forum for discussing sustainable development issues. The DSDS held under the aegis of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change was an epitome of Track 2 diplomacy .
- To expand the scope and reach of the Summit to the global community, DSDS transitioned to WSDS in 2016.
