The Madhya Pradesh government has given an in principle nod to the proposal of National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA0 to translocate six (three pairs) of tigers to Odisha’s Satkosia Tiger Reserve (STR).
- The six tigers (three male and thre female) will be be shifted by March-end, after the All India Tiger Estimation (AITE) 2018 that is currently under way in the State.
Why the translocation: The Satkosia Tiger Reserve is left with only one pair of tigers, who have passed their average age. Translocation of tigers would help in increasing the number of the tigers in the STR. Since the genetic make-up of tigers in Satkosia was similar to that of the Bandhavgarh and Kanha Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh, tigers would not feel alienated in STR. There has also been evidences of a tiger corridor between M.P. and Odisha, Conservation officials are hopeful that the tigers of Madhya Pradesh would easily adopt new climate of Satkosia tiger reserve.
About Satkosia Tiger Reserve
- Satkosia Tiger Reserve of Odisha, comprises of two adjoining Sanctuaries of central Odisha named as Satkosia Gorge Sanctuary and Baisipalli Sanctuary.
- These two sanctuaries together covering an area of 963.87 sq.km, have been notified as Satkosia Tiger Reserve vide on December 31, 2007.
- The Tiger Reserve comes under Gadjat hills sub
