100-year Partnership Agreement

United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer signed a 100-year partnership agreement with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on January 15, 2025.

Key Highlights

  • The agreement is part of a European show of support and promises to keep helping Ukraine endure in its nearly three-year war with Russia.
  • Under the agreement, the UK has committed to providing at least £3 billion in military aid to Ukraine annually until 2030-2031, with further support promised as needed.
  • The UK PM said the landmark century-long agreement commits the two sides to cooperate on defence — especially maritime security against Russian activity in the Baltic Sea, Black Sea and Sea of Azov — and on technology projects including drones, which have become vital weapons for both sides in the war.
  • The treaty also includes a system to help track stolen Ukrainian grain exported by Russia from occupied parts of the country.

Sea of Azov

  • The Sea of Azov is a small body of water surrounded by Russia and Ukraine connected to the Black Sea by the Kerch Strait.
  • The Black Sea is connected with the Aegean Sea through the Bosporus, the Sea of Marmara, and the Dardanelles, and with the Sea of Azov by Kerch Strait.
