Boko Haram

At least 100 villagers were killed in northeastern Nigeria when suspected Boko Haram Islamic extremists opened fire on a market, on worshippers and in people’s homes.

  • According to reports, more than 50 extremists on motorcycles rode into the Tarmuwa council area of Yobe state in Nigeria on September 1, 2024 evening and began firing before setting buildings ablaze.
  • Boko Haram, which since 2009 has launched an insurgency to establish its radical interpretation of Islamic law, or Sharia, in the region.
  • Boko Haram was founded in the early 2000s.
  • It became infamous internationally in 2014, when the group kidnapped hundreds of schoolgirls, known as the Chibok Girls.
  • In 2015 the group pledged allegiance to the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and took the name Islamic State (or State’s) West African Province (ISWAP).
